North Section
The NORTH section of the Whitsunday Islands offers the small town of Bowen on the southern end and the capital of the mid-north coast of Queensland – the city of Townsville.
The mainland coastal town of Bowen traditional focus on vegetable and tropical fruit growing as well as fishery has changed in recent years. The small town has recently managed to put itself on the world map in two occasions. At first as the main filming location of Baz Luhrmann’s epic movie named Australia and lately for its plans to become the world’s largest coal loading port, a proposal which has stirred some controversial due to its close proximity to the world heritage protected Great Barrier Riff.
Townsville is the largest of North Queensland’s Tropical coastal cities. Both places cater for access to the north section of the Whitsunday Islands.
